What is batting strike rate?
Batting strike rate shows how many runs a batter scores for every 100 balls faced. The formula is batting strike rate = runs scored ÷ balls faced × 100. If a batter makes 60 runs from 40 balls, the strike rate is 150.00. It does not mean the player faced 100 balls; it converts the scoring pace to a standard scale.
A batter on 24 from 24 balls has a strike rate of 100.00. A batter on 24 from 12 balls has a strike rate of 200.00. Both have the same runs, but the second innings used half as many deliveries.
How to calculate cricket strike rate
Divide the runs by balls faced, then multiply by 100. For 45 runs from 30 balls, 45 ÷ 30 × 100 = 150.00. For 37 from 29 balls, the result is about 127.59. Scorecards normally round the displayed figure to two decimal places.
A batter who has not faced a ball does not have a meaningful strike rate yet. A scorecard may show a dash or zero until the first recorded delivery. Extras can also change the team total without increasing a batter's runs, so team run rate and an individual batter's strike rate will not always move together.
What counts as a ball faced?
Most legal deliveries count as a ball faced by the striker, even when no run is scored. A wide normally does not count because it is not a legal delivery. A no-ball normally does not count as a ball faced, although runs hit by the batter can still be credited to the batter. The detailed scoring treatment follows the official match record.
Byes and leg byes can count as a ball faced even though the runs are recorded as extras rather than batter runs. That is one reason a batter's strike rate may fall after a delivery on which the team total increases.
Is a higher strike rate always better?
A higher rate means faster scoring, but match context matters. In a short T20 chase, quick scoring may be essential. In a Test match, surviving difficult bowling and protecting the innings can be more valuable than attacking every ball. A batter's role, wickets remaining, target, pitch and innings stage should be read with the number.
Sample size matters too. Twelve runs from four balls produces a strike rate of 300.00, but it describes only four deliveries. An 80-ball innings gives a more stable picture of pace, although the shorter contribution may still be decisive late in a match.
What is bowling economy rate?
Bowling economy rate is the average number of runs charged to a bowler per over. The formula is economy rate = runs conceded ÷ overs bowled. If a bowler concedes 24 runs in four complete overs, the economy rate is 6.00.
A lower economy usually means the bowler gave away fewer runs per over. But wickets, match phase and conditions remain important. A bowler may concede slightly more while dismissing key batters, while another may be economical without creating chances.
Calculate economy for a partial over
Cricket over notation is not an ordinary decimal. A figure of 3.2 overs means three complete overs and two legal balls, which is 20 legal balls in total. To calculate economy, divide runs conceded by legal balls and multiply by six.
If a bowler concedes 25 runs from 3.2 overs, calculate 25 ÷ 20 × 6 = 7.50. Dividing 25 by the decimal number 3.2 would give the wrong answer. After four more legal balls, the over count becomes 4.0.
- 2.1 overs equals 13 legal balls.
- 2.3 overs equals 15 legal balls, or 2.5 overs for division.
- 2.5 overs equals 17 legal balls.
- The next legal delivery completes 3.0 overs.
Which extras affect a bowler's economy?
Wides and no-balls are normally charged to the bowler, so they increase runs conceded. Byes and leg byes are normally team extras rather than runs conceded by the bowler. Penalty-run treatment depends on the official scoring decision.
This is why subtracting every extra from the team total is not a safe shortcut. Use the bowler's official runs-conceded column when available. A live feed may update the team score first and individual bowling figures a moment later.
Strike rate, economy rate and run rate
These rates answer different questions. Batting strike rate belongs to an individual batter and uses runs per 100 balls. Bowling economy belongs to an individual bowler and uses runs conceded per over. Team run rate uses the team's total runs per over.
For example, a team may score at 8.00 runs per over while one batter has a strike rate of 150 and another has 80. The innings rate combines their contributions and extras. The opposition bowlers can also have different economy figures because each conceded a different number of runs in a different number of overs.
