What is run rate in cricket?
Run rate is the average number of runs a batting team has scored per over. It helps a viewer compare scoring speed at different stages of an innings. A score of 60 after 10 overs has a current run rate of 6.00 runs per over. A score of 90 after 15 overs also has a current run rate of 6.00, even though the totals are different.
The basic formula is simple: current run rate = runs scored ÷ overs faced. The result is an average, not a promise that every over contained the same number of runs. One over may produce two runs and the next may produce ten, while the combined rate remains six.
How to calculate current run rate
When the over count is complete, divide the total by the overs. If a team is 144/3 after 24 overs, its run rate is 144 ÷ 24 = 6.00. Wickets do not appear in the formula, but they matter to the match situation because losing batters can make it harder to maintain or increase the pace.
An incomplete over needs one extra step. Cricket over notation counts legal balls after the decimal point; it is not ordinary decimal notation. The score 75/2 after 12.3 overs means 12 overs and three legal balls. Three balls are half an over, so the calculation uses 12.5 overs: 75 ÷ 12.5 = 6.00.
Convert cricket overs correctly
One over contains six legal balls. Convert an innings into total legal balls, calculate the rate per ball, and multiply by six. For 12.3 overs, the team has faced (12 × 6) + 3 = 75 legal balls. If it scored 75 runs, the rate is (75 ÷ 75) × 6 = 6.00 runs per over.
- 8.1 overs means 49 legal balls, not 8.1 decimal overs.
- 8.3 overs means 51 legal balls, or 8.5 overs for division.
- 8.5 overs means 53 legal balls.
- After the next legal delivery, the display becomes 9.0 overs.
Wides and no-balls can add runs without adding a legal ball. The score and run rate may therefore rise while the displayed over count stays unchanged.
What is required run rate?
Required run rate shows the scoring pace a chasing team needs from the balls that remain. Use the formula: required run rate = runs needed ÷ overs remaining. Suppose a team is chasing 201 and has reached 121 after 15 overs of a 20-over innings. It needs 80 more runs from five overs, so the required run rate is 16.00.
A target is one run higher than the first-innings score in a normal chase. If the first team makes 200, the second team needs 201 to win. If a live score says 80 runs are needed, use that verified remaining-runs figure instead of subtracting from an unconfirmed total.
Required rate when balls remain
Scorecards often show balls remaining, which avoids confusion around partial overs. If 45 runs are needed from 30 balls, divide 45 by 30 and multiply by six: the required run rate is 9.00. If 17 runs are needed from 8 balls, the equivalent rate is (17 ÷ 8) × 6 = 12.75.
The last-over situation is often clearer in balls: 12 required from 6 balls. Once a legal delivery produces four runs, the equation becomes 8 from 5. A wide may reduce it to 7 from 5 because the run counts but the ball does not.
How run rate explains chase pressure
Compare current run rate with required run rate. If the batting side is scoring at 8.2 per over but needs 10.5, it must accelerate. If its current pace is above the required pace, it has a buffer, but wickets, bowling quality, pitch conditions and the number of specialist batters left still matter.
Run rate alone cannot predict a winner. A team may have a manageable equation but lose quick wickets; another may be behind the required rate while a set batter changes the match in one over. Treat it as live context alongside the score, wickets, balls remaining and match status.
Current run rate versus net run rate
Current run rate describes one batting innings. Net run rate, usually written NRR, is a tournament standings measure that compares how quickly a team scores with how quickly opponents score against it across relevant matches. Competition rules can apply special treatment when a team is bowled out or when overs are reduced, so the official table is the correct source for the final NRR.
Do not subtract the required run rate from the current run rate and call the result net run rate. They answer different questions: current rate describes the chase now, required rate describes the future pace needed, and NRR compares tournament performance.
Rain, revised targets and DLS
In a rain-affected limited-overs match, the target or number of available overs can change. The required run rate must then use the official revised target and remaining legal balls. A simple rate calculation cannot recreate the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method because DLS also considers resources such as overs and wickets.
Wait for the official revised equation on the live scorecard. Do not assume that the target changes in direct proportion to the lost overs, and do not use an old required rate after play resumes.
